Impact only locally.
- Replaced for loops with memset().
- Added guard against NULL pointer.
- Removed mode as input parameter (never really used).
- Updated unit tests.
- Made struct member init_flag "int".
- Updated function description.
- Updated Copyright notes with 2012.
- Removed some lint warnings.
